- ensure that the human rights of detained refugees, asylum seekers and migrants are protected and respected, specifically children and other vulnerable groups;
- facilitate consideration and discussion of matters relating to the detention of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants and the effects of such detention, and to collaborate with other organizations to this end;
- assist to develop and promote alternatives to immigration detention, and work to prevent, mitigate and highlight the harms associated with immigration detention
Connecting to and supporting the international work being undertaken to ensure the human rights of all people affected by immigration detention, IDC Americas is a 501(c)(3) organization. Donations are deductible to the full extent allowable under IRS regulations.
IDC Americas works to:
- disseminate information and raise public awareness concerning the detention of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants and alternatives to detention of them;
- provide training and make recommendations to individuals, organizations and governments in respect of best practice and alternatives to the detention of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants;
- participate in projects intended to establish alternatives to detention of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants and to alleviate the negative impact of detention of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants;
- participate in projects intended to establish alternatives to detention of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants and to alleviate the negative impact of detention of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants;
- undertake any research, training and community education necessary to further the foregoing purposes;
- co-ordinate or to participate in the raising of funds for the purpose of funding the foregoing purposes.
- engage in advocacy and outreach in the U.S. with stakeholders to demonstrate the advantages of implementing alternatives to detention, in particular for children and other vulnerable groups
